Addicted to the Internet

By Primal Sneeze | Jan 26, 2007

Two days ago my ISP’s main mast was the victim of a lightning strike. The backhaul transceiver was fried at a cost of €34k. Repair or replacement will take days yet. After a lot of hard work and a lot of technical innovation a temporary link to the backbone was up and running last night. I’m online again. A bit slow, but it works.

The funny thing is, I didn’t really miss it. Ok, there were a few whimpers when my phone beeped with new-mail alerts. And a bit of whinging when I couldn’t get the morning prices for yesterday’s Thyestes Chase. And a bit of sweet talking to be done when a client called about why I hadn’t mailed the promised estimates. And a bit of wondering about what was happening in blogland.

But overall I didn’t fret. I am not addicted to the Internet!

That just leaves caffeine, documentaries, horse racing, The Green Wing, Today FM, the dog, my mobile, newspapers, Heidi Talbot’s new album, local gossip, PC World, Guinness, the weather, stew … Fek! 1 out of millions isn’t great.

First of all.. I am surprised that here in Ireland they are serious thunder storms and lightnings. Since I came to Ireland I have noticed only a quiet sound of distant thunder.

Instead of that Ireland is the country of rainbows :)

As far as lack of Internet is concerned it can be disturbing, especially when you are abroad and the Internet is the only medium you got to gather news, being in touch with your family, friends, and your clients.

I can say I am addicted :) I discovered it couple months ago, while I was living in Ballina/Killaloe, and during first couple of weeks in Nenagh.

In Nenagh I payed for wi-fi Internet access 30 Eu/month, but the only place I could get it was a small local pub, and there was a limit of time - may laptop batteries.

Finally, I got 3G from Voda… but this service is not good quality, but… I can be online, and work, contact with people, … at least.

    Sonas Ort!

Yes, MacKozer. We do get thunder and lightning. Just ask my dog ;o) Although that might be a bad idea - it is a touchy subject and you risk being bitten.

I use a wireless Internet service (€25/month). Despite having conductors on all masts they still get hit by lightning now and again.

Would the pub in Nenagh not let you plug your laptop in? That was stingy of them.

They let me plug in, but the only place in the pub where I could be in range of the hot-spot I paid for was the table near the front window, and there was no any socket.

I hope I will see the thunderstorm and lightnings in Ireland. Despite being addicted to the mobile technology I like thunderstorms and lightnings.

    Best regards!
