It’s a canal lads!

By Primal Sneeze | Feb 28, 2007

From the Irish Independent breaking news:

” Bad weather conditions forced Garda divers searching for a missing youth to call off their search of the Grand Canal at Clondalkin, shortly after 4pm this afternoon. High winds and rough water made diving conditions increasingly difficult as the day wore on.Earlier, a body was pulled from the water - it’s believed to be that of one of the two youths who disappeared after leaving a house party in Clondalkin on Sunday morning.

Friends David White from Tallaght and Shane Coughlan from Clondalkin, were last seen as they left the party to go and buy cigarettes.

A search operation was launched after footwear belonging to one of the men was found near the canal.

It’s set to resume at 10am tomorrow”.

Ah, Jayzez, lads! You’re diving in a fekin canal! How the hell can there be rough water and high winds? Do yee just want to knock off for the evening? Will yez pull yerselves together.

It could be possible if there were hippos in the canal. They swirl up the water something terrible and the wind could have been caused by the buggers farting like trombones.

I’ve been thinking about this all day. “Increasingly difficult” - those conditions got worse during the day? Did someone open the lock on them?

I seen the pictures on the telly, Eolaí, and it was extremely windy. The ripples looked like mini-waves.

But still, what could happen to the divers? It’s not as if a freak undertow could drag them down (2m) or a strong current take them (to the next lock).

I’m probably missing something here, but I can’t help thinking back to the searches made in truly atrocious conditions for the fishermen lost off our coast recently.

If the two lads weren’t hoodie-wearing party-goers, but brave, hardworking fishermen, would the search have continued?

An update: Yesterday the newpapers reported the search was called off after 4:30 (not 4:00) and that it was due to fading light (not high winds and rough water).

Did the papers get it wrong the first time or did the Garda Press Office correct them?
