The wisdom of age

My neighbour is a wise old man. He knows many things. He knows when it is a nice day. When it is a cold one. When the wind is from the north. That it’s a long walk to the village. That there are too many cars on the road. That the Murrays left their gate wide open all day last Tuesday. That Mrs. Coonan is getting bet-looking.

Sitting in my kitchen drinking tea, which he knew was a grand cup, he told me Churchill was prime minister during the war.

Now, me, I know many things too. This being one of them. And I told him so.

But how could you? You weren’t even born then. [long pause] Oh, shur I must’ve mentioned it before. [even longer pause] I’d say the rain’s coming.

Once again he was right. He had told me about Churchill - once or twice a month for the last three years - and the rain did come.

  1. I want to know what else he knows about Mrs. Coonan. I trust a man who clings to the things he knows when all around him are texting and Twittering and leaving gates open. A long time ago someone told a small boy you shouldn’t leave gates open and he absorbed that truth. At least he’s only clinging to a gate and not a bible:

I know a man in Lewis in his sixties, father of 6 children. A few years ago when the youngest one was on the computer he told his dad he was surfing the internet. The man got wild at him, telling him to stop showing off and that his lying went against God.

  3. Sam - I’ll ask him about Mrs. Coonan. Yer man in Lewis needs a hot poker shoved up his arse - cold end first, so he burns his hand taking it out.

MacDara - He actually said the emergency but I edited it for the benefit of non-Irish readers. Enjoy your drop o’ scald.
