Upgraded Site

By Primal Sneeze | Sep 29, 2007

I upgraded to WordPress 2.3 this morning. What else would you be doing at 5am on a Saturday anyway?

They call the release Dexter after some tenor saxophonist I never heard of. Bet he was loud though. But that’s neither here nor there. What is important is that the site is working both for you as a reader and me as a ranter.

I’ve changed a couple of things. The colour scheme for one. Let me know if it is okay. I think it is a bit less harsh on the eye myself, but then I don’t have to read this stuff.

I also added AJAX commenting so the page doesn’t reload after you submit. Feel free to try this out. There were some issues with AJAX so if you find you can’t submit a comment let me know by mail (primalsneeze [ag] topmail [ponc] ie) and I’ll disable it.

There is also a check box so you can get mail if there are follow comments. These two are dependent on having Javascript enabled by the way.

The above is important. The below is just of interest. Maybe.

What’s new in 2.3? I hear all one of you scream. Well the visual editor is better - It has an Advanced Toolbar with buttons for Undo/Redo; text colour; paste text from Word (why anyone would use Word is beyond me); special characters like ø, © and ♣, so now all those Norwegian card-playing lawyers can use WordPress too. All great for folks who don’t like messing with HTML.

And the best part is underline is now supported in posts and comments. So you can shout at me without having to use capitals. There are a few other bits and pieces such as Clean up Messy Code, but I won’t go into them now.

The upgrade itself took about 5minutes - the testing nearly two hours - but I may have missed something. So let me know if you have any problems.

What ya think anyway?

why anyone would use Word is beyond me

What shall I use to write my essays in? Usually I just use my page layout programs for text (Freehand) but this seems a bit daft if I’m writing long stuff.

Site looks good, no probs as far as I can see.

  2. Primal Sneeze September 29, 2007 10:23 am

You could use OpenOffice Writer. It’s available for Mac - I’m assuming Annie the designer would be a Mac-Head. Yeah?

There are other free alternatives to Microsoft out there but I like this one best. Mainly because it has save-as-PDF functionality. My lecturers were all Microsoft slaves so I had to submit everything in PDF as I flatly refused to use Word.

Thanks for checking for site errors by the way. I am dreading something cropping up. Already I’m at a loss trying to get the followup comments box up off the footer.

  3. PaddyAnglican September 29, 2007 7:10 pm

Yes - The colour scheme is definitely mellower - makes me feel like I’ve just smoked a joint, or two ;-) Well that is of course how I imagine I would feel if I had and if I had inhaled of course…….hmmmm hmmmmmmmmm oh yeaaaaaaaaa hmmmmmmm hmmmmmm

  4. Gaye September 29, 2007 11:39 pm

I use macbook so here is what I have to say about the upgrade you have performed at some ungodly hour of the morning,

Follow-up comments checkbox showed up where erm, it should be, I think, right below the blank comment box. No problems there.
I see XHTML: You can use these tags: ………….. etc etc……… …… and finally I suppose mac doesn’t show the commands? I don’t see an underline command, etc.

O ya the colour scheme is good, I like it green like that. It’s a nice tone of green, too.

Now I will submit comment and see the no-reload thing.

  5. Gaye September 29, 2007 11:42 pm

Oo it said it saved my comment, it didn’t reload just as you said but even when I reloaded my comment doesn’t show. Do you now have comment moderation?

I don’t like safari, I will now view your page from firefox and see if it’s different.

  6. Gaye September 29, 2007 11:47 pm

Ok, this is weird, I have typed up a comment submitted and it was fine but it wouldn’t show. Then I wrote the one above and that gave the same message saved comment and there it is. Real strange.

Stephen - I have this image of you sitting in a parishioner’s kitchen being fussed over by a little old lady who asks “more draw, Vicar”?

Gayé - Thanks for the mail, by the way - I’ll reply separately. I don’t think you had a Mac issue. Rather you went a bit wild with the HTML tags and your first comment got sent to spam. If you need to mention the Bold tag, for example, but not use it then it needs to be surrounded by Code tags. Actually it’s best to just write Bold because there’s another script running that strips out, what it thinks is, malicious code.

I have added the Underline tag to the list above the comment box. There are other tags that can be used safely but I don’t want to clutter the place.

The comment notification thing appears where it should when the post and/or the comments run to the end of the page. Otherwise it gets stuck to the footer. There’s some conflict with the theme … but that’s another day’s work. It’ll do for now.

Green!? You had me doubting myself there for a minute. Like a lot of guys I have trouble with blue and green. Not a minor complaint for someone who spends 40% of their time creating websites for clients :(
Oh, I nearly forgot. You were comment number 900. Congratulations! No prizes until the 1,000th though.

  8. Gaye September 30, 2007 10:02 am

Ok only 100 to go, I will count down and pop mine write in for the grandth comment.

Ah ok I see what you mean, nice spam force field you got. I was just trying to type what I saw as far as XHTML commands go above the comment box.

    Everything else works fine, yippie!

  9. aonghus September 30, 2007 4:55 pm

Right. It’s either me, or Firefox, but I see no change in the colo(u)r scheme. Certainly no green.

  10. Gaye September 30, 2007 5:40 pm

No Aonghus, sorry that would be me and my poor attempt at humour. My cunning plan was to innocently comment on the new “green” look then of course primal would say no gaye it’s not green then I’d say oh you must be colour blind it is green, etc. So, yea, you are right and it’s just lighter shades of blue type scheme.

  11. aonghus September 30, 2007 7:49 pm

My sense of colour must be desperate. I don’t see any difference in the colour, just a tweaked layout.

  12. Primal Sneeze September 30, 2007 8:03 pm

Ah here! You two carry on by yourselves - I’m off for a pint. Turn off the lights on your way out. Oh, and don’t lock the door - I’ll be back soon.

  13. PaddyAnglican September 30, 2007 8:07 pm

Stephen - I have this image of you sitting in a parishioner’s kitchen being fussed over by a little old lady who asks “more draw, Vicar”?

Happens all the time though the substance tends to be of the liquid variety - In my previous parish one particular little old lady had a plant which I discovered seemed to thrive on Whisky - terrible waste but being a responsible citizen it was a necessary sacrifice :-) Re the new colour scheme it is subtle but that is its genius - Aonghus/Gaye - Keep staring at it and all will become apparent - If not just adjust the contrast on your monitor - much cheaper than drugs! ;-)

  14. PaddyAnglican September 30, 2007 8:17 pm

Re the coundown to edit your comments before publication - now that is impressive. If only I could fit something similar onto my own gob :-( But then it is those ‘open mouth insert foot’ moments that make life so entertaining

  15. Gaye September 30, 2007 10:36 pm

Hehe, I been staring nothing changed… I will go get a dissolve-in-water-fizzy style vitamin C tablet and see if it anything happens.

Primal, can ya give us a yell when it’s 10 comments before the grandth? It will be difficult to just keep counting. Also, left the door unlocked hope you find all your posts and comments intact when you come back.

How come I don’t see a countdown to edit comment? How do I miss that?

  16. Gaye September 30, 2007 10:38 pm

Oooo LOLz I just saw it. Great 5 minutes of thinking and reading, a second chance to say something better or better yet, less stupid.
Paddy it worked! I kept staring at the counter and all sorts of color schemes and subliminal messages began to appear. Wicked!

  17. savannah October 1, 2007 5:44 am

looks lovely, works well, but then, i don’t remember what it looked like before… it’s been a while since my last visit, sugar.

  18. Primal Sneeze October 1, 2007 6:06 am

Stephen - The comment is already published - you have a few minutes to edit. Oh, there is a plug-in for the gob - it’s called CountToFive 1.0. I don’t use it - more fun that way.

Aonghus/Gayé - The basic colour is the same except that the blues and greys have been lightened a notch and solid blue is now stripped.

I’m leaving the Edit Countdown a tad garish for the moment to draw attention to it. Once folks know it’s there, I’ll blend it in with the overall scheme.

  19. Primal Sneeze October 1, 2007 6:31 am

Savannah - How did you sneak in there unnoticed? Anyway, welcome back. Actually I haven’t been over at your place for a while myself. I’ll remedy that right away.

  20. aonghus October 1, 2007 11:17 am

    That’s a relief. I thought I was going colourinsensitive.

  21. Gaye October 1, 2007 11:24 am

Aonghus, I was saying not new colours, rather new tones, subtle shade change, knowingly… Heh, oh, I visited your blog, and it appears I can’t understand a word apart from “agus”. So, just like a pre-schooler I just looked at the colourful pictures. Will be back when I am fluent in Gaelige (sp?)

  22. aonghus October 1, 2007 1:31 pm

    Gaeilge.

I missed the subtle distinctions, in colour and in language. Having no experience of raithneach, Stephen’s quote made me expect something more drastic!

The colour scheme is definitely mellower - makes me feel like I’ve just smoked a joint, or two

  23. Sugar Britches October 1, 2007 2:30 pm

I just spent a few minutes poking around your new digs-Sweet. When is the housewarming? I’ll bring beer.
There isn’t a noticeable difference in your color scheme, though. (that I can see anyway)

Oooh, this edit comment count-down thingy is kinda sexy.

  24. Primal Sneeze October 1, 2007 5:57 pm

Gayé - You do that - learn Gaeilge and enjoy Aonghus’ blog. Then you can check out An Cainteoir Dóchais too.

Aonghus - The basic colour is the same except that the blues and greys have been lightened a notch and solid blue is now stripped. The contrast should be better, but not overpowering.

Sugar - See comment(s) to Aonghus and Gayé above regarding the colour scheme. But, yeah, bring beer. And pizza. That’s what men like. Oh, and yeah, I think the edit comment thing is cool too.

  25. problemchildbride October 1, 2007 7:55 pm

Looks good to me, Sneezy. I’m off to look into 2.3 myself.

  26. Manuel October 1, 2007 11:09 pm

It’s nice, as people used to say a few months ago…..

  27. Medbh October 2, 2007 12:30 am

    Love the new digs, Primal.
The techie talk is waaaay over my head though.

  28. Medbh October 2, 2007 12:32 am

Oh, and I very much like getting the window of opportunity to edit my comment.
Haven’t seen that on a blog before. Classy.

  29. Eolaí October 2, 2007 2:56 am

Can I say a big yay on the colour scheme change? It’s most definitely easier on the eye.

Since I’m still in the middle of the long arrival I’m on a new machine but haven’t yet downloaded my browser of choice, Opera (because I have my old settings on a hard disk on the coffee table that I can’t access until the casing arrives with everything else from America next week). I mention this because Ajax typically causes some problems with Opera - it’s the reason I dropped my work on Squidoo and the reason I can’t be bothered with the effort it takes to change my top Friends in MySpace.

I’ll let ya know how the latest version of Opera and your Ajax are getting along. In Firefox everything looks to be in the right place and functioning just fine.

  30. Primal Sneeze October 2, 2007 4:55 am

Sam - I like 2.3 and my upgrade was pretty painless except for having to replace (not update) some plugins. Other folks did have problems: Grandad had one relating to post categories that required one line of code to be edited manually and Tom Raftery is having major headaches with his Feedburner feed.

Manuel - Yes, they did, didn’t they. Folk are very polite.

Medbh - The edit is great especially when someone messes up a link which we all do.

Eolaí - Stuff arriving next week! All excited are ya? All you need then is Dog Dog and everything’s well with the world.

I tested (a bit, not exhaustively) on Opera 9.23 and it seems okay, if a tad slow.

  31. fatmammycat October 2, 2007 10:15 am

I am totally crap at tech stuff, but I voted in yer competitiion!

  32. Primal Sneeze October 2, 2007 12:44 pm

Good stuff, woman. Fat Mammy Cats make the world go round!

  33. aonghus October 4, 2007 11:25 am

Minor glitch on Windoze 2000 with IE 6:
    (And possibly other flavours)

The box in the middle sometimes flows into the column on the right.

Seems to always happen on first loading the site. History is on - that may have something to do with it.

    Yes I know, I use Firefox when I have a choice…

  34. Primal Sneeze October 5, 2007 5:33 am

Thanks, Aonghus. Are you saying a refresh/reload fixes it?

Somehow, I can’t seem to get concerned. To quote Annie Rhiannon: If you’re still using Internet Explorer please do the world wide web a favour and download Firefox instead. It’s free and it will get you laid.

  35. aonghus October 5, 2007 1:23 pm

Are you saying a refresh/reload fixes it?

Yes. And I agree. But I’m constrained to IE on this machine. (Firefox as Gaeilge is my browser of choice)
