What to do during recession

Ireland is in recession the media tell us. The ESRI, the body the media get their economic information from, tell us Ireland can expect to be in recession by some stage this year.

I’m taking no chances.

As a good citizen I will be doing my bit for the recession. Starting today I will do my best not to spend money.

Here is my plan thus far. Suggestions welcome.

  1. Travel: I will move my laptop from the den into my bedroom. Distance travelled to work each day will be reduced by a staggering 5.8 metres.
  2. Clothing: I intend ripping up old bandages to make shirts. When these shirts become old they will be ripped up to make bandages.
  3. Medical: I will not get sick. I will avoid all contact with others to prevent infection.
  4. Social interaction: When compelled to meet with others I will portray an air of despondency, gloom and hopelessness. I will moan and complain so they too can become gloomy, despondent and hopeless.
  5. Dietary: I will skimp on meals and use the savings to buy food. The dog will be fed every second day and muzzled every other.
  6. Entertainment: I will not go to the pub on Fridays. Instead I will sit at the kitchen table for a couple of hours laughing my head off and periodically visiting the bathroom saying excuse me, sorry there to the furniture. I will encourage my friends to do the same in their own homes.
  7. Employment: I will turn down 7% of all new contracts offered. I will leave here and return to where I came from  (see point 1) or I may move to the garden shed to work (at odds with point 1).

Okay. This plan is as yet far from perfect. But it is a start. I encourage you all to do your bit for the recession. We have not had this opportunity since the 80s. Let’s not waste it.

  1. Based on yours, here’s my list:
    1) Slightly modified ~ I will move my laptop from my bedroom to … Well, I won’t move it so I won’t have to ever travel to work.
    2) Clothing ~ What clothing? I have two sets of pyjamas… Enough.
    3) I never get sick but in the odd event that I do, I just put up with it till it goes away eventually.
    4) None anyways.
    5) I will grown my own veggies, fruits, cows and chicken (uhm..)
    6) See no.4
    7) I am a workaholic so no turning clients down.

  2. I’ve started already…
I am training the wood pigeons in my garden to carry messages.

P1 takes the list to the shop and carries the groceries home. (The butter was all claw marks, the milk turned and the bread a bit dirty where he dropped it).

P2 takes messages to Elly so no more email or snail mail.

P3 is a bit slow so I am still working on her….

If you give the bandages to P2 I’ll do the sewing. I use my hair for thread and file down a tooth for a needle ;)

  3. @Gayé - You are there! No need for more - you have it perfected!

@Grannymar - Good girl! Way to go. Let’s kick this recession off. We’ll have this country back on its knees in no time.

  4. I’ll um…

Hmmm, good point what can I do to help…?

  5. I forgot the nettle soup, nettle salad and the nettle wine! hic!

  6. Dunno, I would prefer to do what we did in the old recession. Get stoned all the time and only move out of the house to sign on the dole. Pretty much guarantees a recession.

    6. John Mc on July 2nd, 2008 at 9:15 pm
  7. @TheChrisD - Well, if you got any cash for your birthday yesterday you could hoard it away.

@Grannymar - Any sackcloth? Could you make some if I sent you raw materials? Via carrier pigeon of course.

@John Mc - Great suggestion, man. Anything at all to keep the country in the slump. If we can do that while stoned then all the better.

    7. Primal Sneeze on July 3rd, 2008 at 5:54 am
  8. No sackcloth I fear.

I do have a couple of flourbags and a few war issue utility blankets. When I am finished making a dress for myself I’ll whip up a shirt for you. The blankets might make a good warm coat for the winter. Is Utility Grey your colour?

  9. You all make me laugh!
Recessions come and recessions go… this is crap, I have nothing useful or funny to say.

  10. Ha! I have you all beaten. I got out in the middle of the boom and fecked off to a country where the economy was already well and truly scuppered. It may have seemed a stupid move at the time but I think my genius has been proven…

  11. I’ll get into the Avenger and drive to the bank where I’ll beg the manager to put interest rates back up to 18%… no, I’ll demand it of him. Then I’ll go and queue for petrol.

    11. Conan Drumm on July 3rd, 2008 at 10:44 am
  12. @Grannymar - Utility Grey is sooo me you wouldn’t believe it! It matches my beard and all.

@Mary - Recessions come and recessions go. Indeed they do. And this one will very quickly if we don’t do our best to keep it.

@Caro - See. And they all laughed at you then. Well now you get your own back. Recession? Recession? You folks don’t know the half of it. I’ve been living in Italy. Now that’s what a fcuked up economy is like.

@Conan Drumm - Oh yes, yes, yes. We must queue for things. Lots of things. Even if there’s no queue.

All the while looking glum and despondent of course.

  13. @Primal Sneeze - That’s true - hoard it away because I’ll probably need it to pay my credit card bills…

  16. I will only eat breakfast and lunch, dinner will be for Sunday, and even then I will only eat it at my Pappy in law’s house.

I will stop wearing tights and develop my farmer’s tan further.

I will cease answering phones all together. This won’t save any moeny but I’ll do it anyway.
I will join Primal in his number 6, but I will ad take away hooch into the mix.

I will try to convince my neighbours to feed the cats more often and not just with the tuna their cats are crazy about.

I’ll cut back on the jelly consumption.

Actually that last one will save a fortune over the year.

  18. @fatmammycat - Well done! The phones thing is good too though you may not realise it: By you and a few others not answering phones there is a fair chance the phone company will have to lay someone off. That’s what we need to keep this recession going.

  19. Recession? I don’t get it.

You Irish talk about far fetched things sometimes. ;)

    19. Sugar Britches on July 4th, 2008 at 5:49 am
  20. @Sugar Britches - It’s simple to explain.

When the Little People get annoyed with our decadence, waste and inhumanity they come out of their world into ours and steal our gold. Then does recession begin. (Recession is not to be confused with depression which can be cured with hot, sweet tea or whiskey).

Once we have learned our lesson the Little People conjure up a rainbow and place some of the gold they took in a crock at the end of it.

Such are the ways of Fairynomics.

  24. You have a beard, Sneezy? I am going to have to completely reimagine you now.

  25. @Dan Sullivan - At 4 in the morning and once more it’s dawning. Eh, Christy’s playing. Who else? Mr. Moore is the king of recession, depression, conscription, description, subscription and all … *stops singing*

Hey, I’m a Lilywhite - I can mess with The Man’s music now and again.

@problemchildbride - Get the cat a chest-expander. Worked wonders for my budgie. The one I had last year.

Have I a beard? Does the pope shite in the wood? Of course I do. (See pic. top right)

  27. I like the new feature where a clicky takes you straight to the comment. Having said that, what are you doing Primal?! You know all these little features that do things for us will only serve to make ME lazier? Blogging in my PJ’s already, coming to read your post and I don’t even have to scroll through the comments? I don’t have to think and type properly either. What, did I make a typo? One click and I can edit my comment. You are like the inventor of remote control, or drive-through, or something…

PS: WP Ajax Edit Comments box rocks my world.

  28. @aonghus - Same as that. Never underestimate the power of the underworld. Those washing-up liquid ads with the subliminal messages prove that.

    ps. Enjoy the hols!

@Gayé - Comment editing of some form should be built into the WP core. I really believe that.
I also believe it’s morning - so I’d better go doing something useful.

  29. Day 8 of the recession last Monday and redundancies announced at our place Primal. So I’ll be mostly looking over my shoulder for the next while trying to shrug the tap.

    Hey that greeting is freaky,

    29. Sniffle&Cry on July 5th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
  30. @Sniffle&Cry - A recession can be an opportune time for the top hats to implement redundancies they’ve want to make before. Less painful - on them.

Lower face part up, and wait until you see what happens.

    ps. Freaky is my forte.
